Walker Users Increase Independence with Safe Drink Transportation

Doctors prescribe walkers to patients requiring assistance with mobility and stability. This external aid promotes freedom of movement and independence. The medical protocol for prescribing a walker and the suggested time for using a walker varies based on the needs of the user. Sometimes, external assistance is only needed for a short time, but more often, it becomes a permanent lifestyle change for Senior citizens. Seniors strive to remain independent and usually adapt to external aids as needed. Walkers are well designed for two major tasks; providing additional support to the body and stabilizing balance. It is also necessary they fold and store easily. They enable the user to move about easily at home and venture outside the home without assistance. But, they create another handicap that frustrates some users and often hinders sociability.

Users can maneuver the walker into the kitchen and prepare the perfect cup of coffee. Then they can gaze across the room at their favorite recliner and the reality of the new handicap becomes obvious. There is no way to safely transport the hot coffee from the kitchen to the recliner.

Setting the hot cup of coffee on the seat of the walker is risky. Trying to stabilize it with one hand and push the walker with the other jeopardizes the safety of the user. The user suffers bouts of frustration and helpless feelings. The purpose of the walker is to promote independence and allow freedom, not create additional handicaps.

Walker cup holders eliminate this handicap. Hot or cold drinks can be transported safely from kitchen to recliner or brought along while walking. In a cup holder, they are available anytime a sip of drink is desired. Whether the user is venturing through antique markets alone or visiting amusement parks with the grandkids, a drink is accessible, secure in the cup holder, without having to ask for assistance from family or friends.

Some people have tried various DIY projects to secure drinks to walkers. Most of these have created a complicated situation or the drink is not secure. Others have purchased drink holders designed for cars or trucks and attempted to attach them to walkers. The inappropriate design is clumsy, unstable and usually produces an unsatisfactory result.

Walker cup holders are the ‘necessary accessory’ for anyone dependent on a walker. They provide additional independence and enhance confidence for the user. Now, walker users can include all the events in their life that bring them satisfaction and enjoyment. Everything from the morning coffee club meeting at a neighbor’s home to enjoying the favorite glass of wine in the comfy recliner.
